4600 Icons: The Ones You Searched For

Pixelarticons now ships 4600 icons. This update adds 55 new icons (169 components in all), and not one of them was picked because it seemed like a good idea.

The site logs a search_no_results event whenever someone searches and the grid comes back empty. That log is a list of icons people expected to find and did not. This batch is the top of it.

telegram was searched 17 times in 60 days, more than any other missing icon. ghost came second at 9. Then cup, rank, support, steam, usb, chrome, twitter, ticket, swap, html and css, in that order. So that is what got drawn.

Brands and platforms

The biggest single block, because a pixel interface with a non-pixel logo in it always looks broken.

  • Messaging and social: telegram (line · sharp · solid · glyph), telegram-old for interfaces still on the previous mark, and twitter-bird.
  • Steam and its hardware: steam and steam-square, plus steam-deck, steam-machine and steam-frame for platform lists that need to name the device, not just the store.
  • The web stack: html5, css3 and react for tech-stack rows and code-sample tabs, with a plain css marker for stylesheet files and an api icon for developer sections.
  • Browsers: google-chrome.

Interface staples that were missing

Ordinary icons that a 4431-icon set had somehow never included.

  • usb and usb-symbol: the physical plug and the branched symbol, for ports, drives and connected-device lists.
  • ticket, ticket-plus and ticket-minus: admission, bookings, vouchers and help-desk queues.
  • swap, swap-items, arrows-left-right and arrows-top-bottom: the set had no left-right arrow at all until now.
  • support and help: a headset for when a person answers, a life ring for when a document does.
  • leaderboard, ranking and rank: standings, relative position and the winners’ podium.
  • verified, unknown and unsupported: the three states every interface eventually needs and nobody plans for.
  • newspaper, news and blog for publications, product updates and long-form writing, plus a heavier circle-info-thick for notices where the standard weight disappears.

Science, games and things

  • brain and ai-brain for memory, learning and model features, flask and atom for labs and experiments, cube for 3D and packages, wand for auto-fix and generate actions.
  • ghost for incognito, hidden and haunted, chest for loot and rewards, and game-controller, gamepad-half and friends for co-op and split-screen states.
  • handshake, keyboard-mouse and gps-signal.
  • cup, mug, milk-carton, egg and chicken, because people kept asking.

Five icons the search was hiding

Some searches came back empty even though a close match existed, and a few came back empty with no match at all while the “did you mean” strip quietly suggested the wrong thing. brain was searched 15 times and the suggester kept offering rain. wand was offered hand. flask was offered file-flash. cube was offered test-tube. handshake and chest had the same problem.

Those five were invisible in the demand list until the wrong suggestions were checked one by one. brain would otherwise have ranked second in this entire batch.

Search got better too

Twenty search terms now resolve that previously returned nothing, without a single new drawing, because the icon already existed under a name nobody would guess. funnel finds filter. dots finds more-horizontal. emoji finds smile. reset finds reload. medal finds award. paintbrush finds brush. Plurals like headphones, documents, hands and gears now find their singulars.

Free and Pro

The free set is unchanged in this release: these 55 are Pro icons. The free tier stays where it is, and installs the same way.

npm install pixelarticons

All 4600 icons, in every style they ship in, come with a Pro license. If you already own one, pull in this batch with a single command:

npx pixelarticons upgrade --key=YOUR_LICENSE_KEY

Browse the new marks in the brands category, the new interface icons in system and devices, or search for any of the names above. If the thing you want is still missing, search for it anyway. That log is how this batch got made, and it is how the next one will.
